"Comics, 1964-2024" exhibition at Pompidou Center
Categories : Exhibition, published on : 9/26/24
The Centre Pompidou invites you to a fascinating dive into the world of comics through an exceptional exhibition that spans the history of this art form from 1964 to the present day. This retrospective explores the richness and diversity of the medium, from Franco-Belgian style to Japanese manga, including underground abstract drawing.
This monumental event celebrates masterpieces of European, American, and Japanese comics. Visitors will have the privilege of discovering an extensive collection of original pages, ranging from iconic works by Gotlib and Hergé to rarer creations, displayed across five floors.
Many of the works on display have never been shown in France before, providing a unique opportunity to see comic book treasures for the first time in a museum setting. The Centre Pompidou aims to shine a light on this often-underestimated art form and reveal its richness and complexity.
The exhibition unfolds over five floors, with a journey through twelve thematic sections such as fear, dreams, laughter, and more. Each section will allow you to explore different facets of this captivating art.
Special attention is given to Japanese manga, which are rarely exhibited outside Japan. You’ll have the chance to see original pages of Doraemon, displayed for the first time in France.
The exhibition also highlights the works of numerous female artists, bringing deserved visibility to talents like Alison Bechdel and Marjane Satrapi in a field often dominated by men.
Note that this exhibition is a unique opportunity: the displayed pages will return to archives and private collections in November to preserve their integrity. Anne Lemonnier emphasizes that "a drawing must be displayed at a maximum of 50 lux" to avoid damage.
Don’t miss this chance to see comic books in a new light!
Until November 4, 2024. Open daily from 11 am to 9 pm, except Tuesdays.
