In collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, the Fondation Louis Vuitton presents a unique selection of works that illustrate the genesis and history of the iconic masterpiece of 1911, "The Red Studio".
This exceptional exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to discover Matisse's studio as he depicted it in his famous painting. By bringing together for the first time the works present in "The Red Studio" since they left the artist's studio in Issy-les-Moulineaux, the exhibition provides a fascinating insight into his creative process and the environment that inspired him.
At the heart of the exhibition is Matisse's "The Red Studio", accompanied by six paintings, three sculptures, and a ceramic reproduced in the painting, created between 1898 and 1911. Famous works such as "The Young Sailor (II)" are alongside lesser-known pieces, but equally captivating, offering a complete perspective on the artist's work.
In addition to the original works, the exhibition also presents unpublished archival documents and photographs that shed light on the creation context of "The Red Studio" and trace its journey since its acquisition by MoMA in 1949. Works closely related to "The Red Studio", such as "The Blue Window" and "Grand Interior in Red", are also part of the exhibition, allowing visitors to grasp the full richness of Matisse's artistic legacy.
In parallel with the exhibition "Matisse, The Red Studio", the Fondation also presents an exhibition dedicated to Ellsworth Kelly, offering visitors a complete immersion in the world of modern and contemporary art.
